Homemade Enchilada Sauce Recipe

Yield 2 cups


  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • tbsp all-purpose flour 
  • 1 tbsp ground chili powder 
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar
  • Freshly ground black pepper



  1. In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, add the oil, when the oil is hot, add the flour and the spices. Let it cook while stirring for a minute. Whisk in the tomato paste and pour in the broth while whisking to avoid any lumps.
  2. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes, until the sauce has thickened a bit.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the vinegar and season with salt and pepper.
